Choosing
Most men who sit down for colour do not want jet black hair. They want the grey softened so it reads as salt and pepper rather than a stripe at the temples. Say that out loud when you sit down and the barber will mix accordingly. Going a full shade darker than your natural colour is where men's colour usually starts to look obvious.
Ammonia is what opens the hair up so colour can get in. It works, and it is also what produces the sharp smell and most of the scalp irritation people complain about. The ammonia-free option is gentler on the scalp and easier to sit through, at AED 160 for short hair or AED 80 for the beard. If your scalp is sensitive, or you colour often, it is the one to take.
Beard hair is coarser than head hair and takes colour differently, which is why it is priced and timed separately. It also grows out faster, so most people come back for the beard more often than the hair. If you are doing both, book them together and we will match the tone. More on beard work on the beard grooming page.
This one is not colour. It is for hair that has been dried out, whether by sun, sea, air conditioning or repeated colouring. It smooths the hair and makes it sit down properly. Price starts at AED 250 and moves with length and how much product the hair drinks, so ask for a quote when you book rather than assuming the base price.
Cut first, colour second, in the same visit. It wastes product to colour hair you are about to remove. Pair it with a haircut at AED 100 and you are in and out once instead of twice.
Questions
At The Vintage Barbershop, short hair colour is AED 150 and long hair colour is AED 180. The ammonia-free version of the short hair colour is AED 160. Beard colour is AED 70, or AED 80 ammonia-free.
Ammonia opens the hair so the colour can penetrate. Ammonia-free formulas are gentler on the scalp and have far less smell, which makes them the better choice for sensitive scalps or frequent colouring. Normal colour is AED 150 for short hair, ammonia-free is AED 160.
Yes. Grey blending keeps your natural base and softens the grey rather than covering it completely. Tell the barber you want blending rather than full coverage and he will mix for that.
It depends on your hair and how you wash it. Because the price moves with length and product used, ask for a quote and a realistic estimate when you book rather than going by the AED 250 starting price alone.
Yes, please book colour and treatments rather than walking in. They take longer than a cut and we need to hold the chair. Book on Fresha or send a WhatsApp message.
Yes, and it is the sensible order: haircut first, then colour. Book both together so enough time is reserved.
